Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Professor of Counselor Education. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position to begin July 30, 2027.

 

The successful candidate will teach graduate-level counseling classes, supervise counseling students, participate in service activities, and engage in research. Teaching responsibilities will include graduate courses in the M.S. in Counseling program. Specific courses may include Addiction Counseling; Counseling Techniques; Diagnosis and Psychopathology; Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in Counseling; Group Counseling; Psychological Assessment & Appraisal; Lifespan Development; Counseling Diverse Populations; Couples & Family Counseling; Crisis & Trauma Counseling; Counseling Theories; and other courses in areas of expertise. Summer teaching opportunities are available. Research activity is required for this position and scholarship activities involving students will be encouraged. 

 

The Department of Psychological Science currently has generous lab space, a counseling lab with suites for private sessions, and a recently opened mental health clinic. In addition, the university has funding opportunities to help support research and teaching equipment expenses.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach graduate courses in the M.S. in Counseling program

  • Advise graduate students 

  • Provide supervision for graduate students

  • Serve on program, department, and university committees

  • Engage in research and support student-involved scholarship activities

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrate commitment to excellence in graduate-level teaching, clinical supervision, and student mentorship.
  • Ability to effectively advise and support graduate counseling students throughout their academic and professional development.
  • Capacity to contribute to an active research agenda, with an interest in engaging students in collaborative scholarly activities.
  • Knowledge of and experience with CACREP-accredited counseling programs and the standards that guide counselor preparation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and collegially with faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Commitment to fostering respectful learning environments and meeting the diverse needs of students.
  • Willingness to teach in various modalities (e.g., in-person, online, hybrid) and at times that accommodate program needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to program development and serve on department, college, and university committees.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the ethical and legal standards of the counseling profession and counselor education.

 

Required Qualifications

A Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-accredited program is required. ABD will be considered if the doctorate will be completed by July 30, 2027.

 

Additional Qualifications

  • Licensed or license-eligible as a professional counselor (LPC) in Tennessee. 
  • Experience with advising, practicum, internship & clinical supervision. 
  • Background or expertise in clinical mental health counseling.
