Sonic Summary

info
  • Modern Construction Services is seeking an HR Generalist to manage daily HR operations, including onboarding, payroll support, and compliance documentation.
  • The ideal candidate should have HR generalist experience across the employee lifecycle and multi-state payroll experience, with a preference for candidates with construction or facilities experience.
  • This role offers an annual salary of $55,000 to $65,000, depending on experience, along with full benefits including medical, dental, vision, and a 401(k) with matching contributions.
  • Candidates should be detail-oriented, able to communicate effectively, and comfortable working with both office and field teams.
  • This position is designed for someone who enjoys executing established systems rather than developing new HR strategies.

Modern Construction Services is growing fast, and our team spans office staff and field crews across our Construction and Facilities Maintenance divisions. We are a certified WBENC women-owned commercial construction and facilities maintenance company, headquartered in Charlotte and serving clients nationwide. We need an HR Generalist who runs the day to day of HR well, from onboarding through payroll support, so the systems we built get followed every time and nobody is left wondering where things stand.

What you will do

•    Own full-cycle onboarding and offboarding: background checks, drug screening, I-9s, new hire paperwork, and the new hire announcement.

•    Keep personnel files and compliance documentation clean, current, and audit-ready.

•    Run 30/60/90-day check-ins for every new hire and keep performance evaluation cycles on schedule for every employee.

•    Handle day-to-day benefits questions and run open enrollment logistics.

•    Be the first, friendly point of contact for PTO, policy, and everyday employee questions, and know what genuinely needs to be escalated.

•    Own recruiting admin: job postings, interview scheduling, extending offers, and keeping Predictive Index job targets current for every open role.

•    Prepare bi-weekly, multi-state, multi-site payroll for Finance approval, and back up Finance on payroll when needed.

•    Execute the programs leadership designs, like the career ladder and remote work policy, and carry our values into how you treat the office and the field.

 What we are looking for

•    HR generalist experience across the employee lifecycle: onboarding, offboarding, personnel files, benefits administration, and basic employee relations.

•    Multi-state, multi-site payroll experience. Job costing is a plus.

•    HRIS administration experience and a fast learning curve on new systems.

•    Comfort working with both office staff and field-based teams, and the ability to be trusted by both.

•    Sound judgment about what to handle directly and what to escalate, and the habit of communicating before anyone has to ask.

•    Nice to have: construction or facilities experience, Workable or a similar applicant tracking system, and Predictive Index or a similar assessment tool.

This is your seat if

•    You are detail-obsessed. Forms, check-ins, and compliance work get done right and on time, every time.

•    You follow a process that works and catch what is slipping before it becomes a problem.

•    You anticipate what is needed and say something before anyone has to chase you.

•    You own work through completion or a clean handoff, so nothing sits.

•    You like moving between office staff and field crews, and you earn trust with both.

•    You care about the culture, not just the task list.

This is not your seat if

•    You want to design HR strategy and policy from day one. This seat runs what leadership has already built, and runs it well.

•    You are not energized by moving between different kinds of teams and people.

•    Forms, check-ins, and documentation feel like busywork rather than the thing that makes everything else possible.

•    You would rather escalate than decide what you can handle yourself.

This is a seat where your work shows up immediately. Keep the check-ins on schedule and the systems followed, and leadership gets to spend its time on the business instead of the details. If that is the work you take pride in, we would love to talk.

•    Annual company performance bonus.

•    Full benefits, including medical, dental, and vision.

•    401(k) with 3% matching contribution.
