Westwood Professional Services, Inc.

The Water Resources Intern will join a water resources engineering team supporting hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for stormwater management on land development projects, including residential subdivisions, commercial sites, and mixed-use developments. Projects range from small drainage studies to large detention and floodplain analyses for private developers, homebuilders, and municipal clients. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply hydrology and hydraulics coursework to real-world development projects.

As a Water Resources Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply regulatory standards — including FEMA floodplain regulations and local stormwater ordinances — in the design process and will assist Senior Engineers in the preparation of drainage reports, detention facility designs, and floodplain studies.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of hydrologic and hydraulic models to support stormwater management design for land development projects.
  • Support the design of detention and retention facilities, storm drain systems, and best management practices for residential and commercial sites.
  • Assist in preparing drainage reports, floodplain studies, and Letter of Map Revision applications for regulatory submittal.
  • Research FEMA floodplain maps, local stormwater ordinances, and watershed data applicable to project sites.
  • Utilize hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software to analyze existing and proposed drainage conditions.
  • Coordinate with civil engineers and local agencies to support stormwater permitting and plan review comments.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering program, preferably Civil or Environmental Engineering.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
  • Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
  • Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions on occasion.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:

  • Relevant industry experience through engineering coursework projects or prior internships in water resources or stormwater engineering.
  • Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software.
