R&D Laboratory Technician III

Job Summary

As an R&D Technician III in the Physical Testing Laboratory, you will perform a wide range of routine and non-routine laboratory duties required to support Research and Development’s initiatives, including manufacturing operations support, product development/innovation, ESG efforts, and material testing. 

The R&D Technician III is a fully proficient laboratory technician who works independently with minimal supervision. You are competent across the majority of test methods and equipment in the Physical Testing Lab, can manage complex testing projects, develop new test procedures, and serve as a reliable resource for scientists and engineers. You actively participate in training others and contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory operations.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Laboratory Testing & Technical Expertise 

• Perform a wide range of routine and non-routine laboratory testing independently, demonstrating competency across the majority of Physical Testing Lab test methods and equipment 

• Demonstrate proficiency in operating standard and specialized laboratory equipment upon completion of training, including Instrons, viscometers, durometers, hydraulic presses, hot air heat welding machines, accelerated weathering chambers (QUV, Xenon Arc), colorimeters, thermal conductivity equipment, table/band/chop saws, balances, ovens, freezers, and water baths 

• Manage complex testing projects from sample preparation through data analysis and reporting, coordinating with scientists and engineers on priorities and deliverables 

• Interpret test results, perform statistical analysis (X-R charts, histograms, statistical calculations), and use data to support R&D decision-making 

• Troubleshoot equipment issues independently and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed 

Method Development & Continuous Improvement 

• Develop new test methods and procedures for existing or new products and processes 

• Improve method accuracy and recommend enhancements to testing protocols based on experience and data analysis 

• Assist in the identification, evaluation, purchase, and installation of new or replacement equipment 

• Participate in audits as needed, including support for outside auditors 

Training, Safety & Collaboration 

• Train Technician I and II staff, interns, and plant employees on test methods, equipment operation, and laboratory procedures 

• Participate in and contribute to safety meetings, Good Catch, and T3P objectives; consistently model safe laboratory practices 

• Follow all laboratory safety protocols, including proper handling and storage of hazardous waste and materials 

• Create and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) 

• Collaborate with all R&D product teams, plant operations, purchasing, vendors, suppliers, and outside auditors as needed 

• Participate in the 5S process and maintain a clean, organized laboratory work area 

• Other duties as assigned 

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

• Proficiency across the majority of Physical Testing Lab test methods and equipment 

• Strong working knowledge of ASTM, European, and CTM test methods and SOP procedures 

• Solid knowledge of specific product line processing technology, including mixing, aging testing, thermal testing, and heat welding  

• Understanding of roofing system technology (design, installation, heat welding) and polymer materials and compounds 

• Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems and current business, process control, statistical, and lab equipment software 

• Strong data analysis and statistical skills, including X-R charts, histograms, statistical calculations, and data-driven decision-making 

• Equipment troubleshooting skills and ability to coordinate repairs and replacements 

• Ability to develop new test methods and improve existing procedures 

• Strong attention to detail with consistently high levels of accuracy 

• Effective communication skills across all organizational levels—technicians, scientists, engineers, management, plant operations, purchasing, vendors, suppliers, and outside auditors 

• Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills

Education and Experience: 

Education 

• High school diploma or GED (required) 

Experience 

• 5–7 years of experience in field or related experience 

• Proficiency across the majority of test methods and equipment in the Physical Testing Lab 

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage complex testing projects 

• Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment 

• Experience training other technicians and interns 

• Familiarity with laboratory equipment listed under Working Conditions 

Preferred 

• Associate’s degree in a related field 

• Experience developing new test methods or procedures 

• Experience in a commercial roofing or building products R&D laboratory 

Working Conditions: 

• Primarily operates in a laboratory setting with regular work in an office setting; periodic work in manufacturing plant environments where there may be exposure to dirt, dust, and temperatures warmer or colder than a typical office 

• Employees typically work 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday; start and end times may vary. Overtime on Saturdays and/or Sundays is possible depending on CCM schedules and needs. This position supports a 24/7 operation, requiring flexibility for varying shifts 

• Less than 10% travel annually
