Purpose and Scope:

The Automation Technician is responsible for advanced technical support, system enhancements, and lifecycle management of automation and control systems within the steel mill. This role serves as a technical resource, focused on executing control system improvements, implementing PLC and automation modifications, and supporting the continued advancement of manufacturing technology. Working closely with the leadership, engineers, and external integrators, this position supports the design, implementation, and sustainment of automation, robotics, and safety systems. The Automation Technician also provides technical guidance and support to maintenance personnel and other technicians to ensure reliable, efficient, and safe operation of integrated manufacturing systems. This role functions as an advanced escalation point beyond standard maintenance and technician capabilities, with direct impact on equipment reliability, production throughput, and product quality. The Automation Technician is accountable for ensuring that manufacturing systems operate in accordance with defined design, performance, and safety standards.

 

Responsibilities:

    • Develop, modify, test, commission, and maintain PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems.

    • Execute system upgrades, migrations, and enhancements while ensuring system integrity.

    • Create and maintain documentation including control narratives, schematics, and programming standards.

    • Analyze control system performance and implement improvements.

    • Design and support safety control systems and participate in risk assessments.

    • Support robotic system integration and optimization.

    • Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis across control and equipment systems.

    • Analyze system interactions including drives, instrumentation, valves, and actuators.

    • Coordinate with integrators and support FAT/SAT, installation, and commissioning.

    • Support startup, ramp-up, and optimization of systems.

    • Drive continuous improvement and standardization across the facility.

    • Participate in audits and ensure compliance with standards and regulations.

 

Technical Skills:

  • Working knowledge of system integrators and supporting automation projects
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems within automated manufacturing environments
  • Familiarity around industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, OPC)
  • Proven ability to read, interpret, and modify electrical schematics, control logic, and technical documentation
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex automation and integrated systems

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma with 12 years of expierence in industrial automation, automation systems (PLCs, HMIs, drives, instrumentation), or electromechanical/robotic systems (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, etc.) in a manufacturing environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, or Automation with 10 years of expierence in industrial automation, automation systems (PLCs, HMIs, drives, instrumentation), or electromechanical/robotic systems (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, etc.) in a manufacturing environment.

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, or Automation with 8 years of expierence in industrial automation, automation systems (PLCs, HMIs, drives, instrumentation), or electromechanical/robotic systems (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, etc.) in a manufacturing environment.
