We are now recruiting a Policy Manager to join our Research, Evaluation and Policy team. This role will be responsible for ensuring evidence, insight and analysis are translated into high-quality policy positions that influence national policy development and improve outcomes for older people. The postholder will manage the policy function and work closely with colleagues across the organisation, including Research and Evaluation, Public Affairs and Communications.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the policy function, ensuring delivery of ALONE’s policy priorities and annual work programme.
  • Monitor political, legislative and policy developments affecting older people, identifying emerging issues and opportunities relevant to ALONE’s work.
  • Develop clear, evidence-based policy positions, briefings, submissions and recommendations aligned with ALONE’s strategic priorities.
  • Translate research, evaluation, service insight and external evidence into clear policy recommendations and priorities.
  • Identify opportunities for policy development and influence, including consultations, government strategies, legislation and emerging policy issues.
  • Work closely with Public Affairs to ensure policy positions and evidence inform political engagement and advocacy activity.
  • Work closely with Communications to ensure ALONE’s policy positions, evidence and expertise are effectively communicated to relevant audiences.
  • Manage the development and implementation of ALONE’s policy development model, ensuring a consistent, evidence-based approach to policy work.
  • Work with colleagues and external partners to scope, commission and use research that strengthens ALONE’s policy positions and advocacy.
  • Manage and develop the policy team, ensuring high-quality work, effective collaboration and delivery against agreed priorities.
  • Additional duties as assigned



Essential skills & experience

The successful candidate will have:

  • A qualification in Public Policy
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a senior policy (or equivalent) role
  • Experience developing and disseminating evidence-based policy positions
  • Understanding and experience of translating policy into influencing strategies
  • A strong understanding of how research can be used to inform policy development
  • The ability to operate in a fast-paced, complex environment
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.
  • Ability to actively listen, seek out and consider information objectively, and respond to challenging situations with reason and proportionality
  • Strong understanding of older person’s policies and services
  • Experience managing small teams
