Bell & Evans is seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Hatchery Manager to help lead our night shift hatchery operations. This role works closely with the Hatchery Manager and provides leadership and direction to night shift technicians while supporting Maintenance, Sanitation, and Operations activities.
The Assistant Hatchery Manager will play a key role in ensuring our setters and hatchers operate safely, efficiently, and consistently. This position requires a strong leader who can make sound decisions, communicate effectively across departments, develop team members, and respond quickly when unexpected issues arise.

What You'll Do
As the Assistant Hatchery Manager, you will help oversee night shift operations with a primary focus on setters and hatchers. You will work closely with the Hatchery Manager and other department leaders to keep operations running safely and efficiently.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide leadership and direction to night shift technicians and hourly team members
- Oversee setter and hatcher operations and ensure equipment and processes are functioning properly
- Communicate daily with the Hatchery Manager, Director of Maintenance, QA Manager, and Director of Hatchery Operations regarding night shift activities and issues
- Make timely decisions and take appropriate action when issues arise with setters, hatchers, or other hatchery operations
- Review setter and hatcher checklists to ensure required tasks are completed accurately
- Coordinate with Maintenance on preventative maintenance and equipment concerns
- Assist with production department startups when needed
- Set eggs as needed to support hatchery operations
- Work with other department supervisors to ensure staffing is utilized effectively and operational priorities are met
- Coordinate and respond to critical events such as power outages, chiller issues, equipment failures, and unknown alarms
- Provide technicians with specialized training related to incubation processes and hatchery equipment
- Train and develop team members in key positions and backup roles
- Identify training needs and support employee development
- Maintain strong communication between departments to ensure smooth night shift operations
- Promote and maintain Bell & Evans animal welfare standards
- Ensure employees follow company policies, procedures, safety standards, and operational requirements
- Support continuous improvement efforts that enhance hatchery performance, efficiency, and reliability
Leadership Responsibilities
As a member of the hatchery leadership team, the Assistant Hatchery Manager will be responsible for developing and supporting employees while maintaining high standards of performance.
Responsibilities include:
- Supervise and develop hourly team members
- Provide training and coaching to ensure employees understand and follow company policies and procedures
- Regularly communicate with team members regarding performance, expectations, and development
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback
- Establish development goals and educational plans based on individual employee needs
- Identify opportunities to strengthen employee skills and prepare team members for key positions
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment

Previous experience in hatchery operations, live operations, poultry production, or a similar agricultural or manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- College education preferred but not required
- 3 to 5 years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred
- Experience in live operations is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and develop employees
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, procedures, and other company documentation
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Basic computer skills required
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other common computer applications
Communication & Teamwork
The Assistant Hatchery Manager must be able to communicate effectively with employees, supervisors, managers, and other department leaders. This position requires daily communication across departments to address operational issues, coordinate staffing, and ensure priorities are met.
Strong communication skills are essential, and the ability to build positive working relationships with team members is critical to success in this role.
