Veterinary Anesthesia Technician 1

About This Role 

The Veterinary Anesthesia Technician 1 provides support to preclinical surgical research by providing the safe and effective administration and maintenance of anesthesia to animals undergoing surgical procedures, maintaining accurate records, and monitoring animal recovery.  

What You’ll Do  

• Prepares and anesthetizes animals according to study procedures and protocols, including administering sedation, intubation of animals and proper mechanical ventilation set up and usage. 
• Calculates medication dosages per study protocol and species-specific SOPs.  
• Maintains general anesthesia in an operating room setting and administers protocol specific medications, continuous rate infusions and emergency intervention as needed.  
• Responsible for maintaining controlled drug logs using integrated systems. 
• Maintains and troubleshoots a wide variety of anesthesia equipment.  
• Maintains accurate and detailed anesthesia records, documenting medications administered, vital signs, observations, and any complications during anesthesia. 
• May monitor animal recovery and administer post-procedure pain relief.  
• Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains anesthesia equipment, ensuring optimal functioning and readiness for use. Follows proper protocols for maintenance and calibration of monitoring equipment.  
• Stays abreast of current veterinary anesthesia techniques, including emergency medications and procedures. Provides training and guidance to preclinical surgical staff regarding anesthesia protocols and best practices.  
• Ensures study compliance and safety of animals by adhering to veterinary medical regulations, safety protocols, preclinical policies, and study procedures and protocols.  

Required Qualifications  

• Associate degree or equivalent 
• 3-6 years of relevant work experience in veterinary anesthesia  
• Good understanding of advanced veterinary anesthesia techniques, general anesthesia medications, anesthesia equipment including veterinary ventilators, and general anesthesia monitoring parameters. 
• Proficiency in using monitoring equipment and troubleshooting anesthesia-related issues. Proficient in constant rate infusion (CRI) calculations and administration.   
• Good understanding of safety protocols for clinical environment and animal care  
• Good problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions during emergencies.  
• Good written and oral communication skills  
• Strong medical math skills 
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for accurate documentation and recordkeeping.  
• Ability to multitask and perform a variety of activities  

Preferred Qualifications  

• Registered Veterinary Technician, Surgical Research Anesthesia Certification and/or Registered Laboratory Animal Technician certifications are strongly preferred.

• This is a fully onsite position in Atlanta, GA
