CMM programmers program and operate coordinate measuring machines (CMM) to perform inspections on machined aerospace parts. This role is required to document specific information regarding approvals and non-conforming parts and may be involved in problem-solving to identify rework requirements. The CMM team also participates in the development and maintenance of our quality system and associated policies, procedures, and work processes to ensure that Company, regulatory, customer, and industry requirements are fulfilled. Personnel may also provide quality and/or manufacturing process training for manufacturing personnel.

Essential Functions

  • Programs and operates a CMM(s); revises programs to maximize effectiveness and efficiency
  • Investigates and collaborates with cross-functional team members to resolve manufacturing-related non-conformances or other concerns
  • Initiates nonconformance records and disposition of parts not meeting requirements
  • Completes First Article Inspections to AS9102 and company/contractual requirements
  • Continually strives to improve inspection effectiveness and efficiency by recommending and supporting the implementation of process improvements
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with internal and external personnel to identify root causes, troubleshoot and address errors and trends, and negotiate the resolution of non-conforming parts and necessary rework or reinspection
  • May perform other inspections using precision measurement instruments such as mics, calipers, and gauges
  • Completes other duties as required
  • Regular attendance on-site at the workplace is required

This role is identified as requiring ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) compliance; therefore, qualified candidates must meet the definition of a U.S. Person (per EAR Part 772 and ITAR 120.15):

  • An individual who is granted U.S. citizenship, or
  • An individual who is granted U.S. permanent residence (i.e., a "Green Card" holder), or
  • An individual who is granted status as a "protected person"

Required Education and Work Experience

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • An associate degree or equivalent education in a relevant mechanical/technical program is preferred
  • A minimum of five (5) years of technical machining, programming, or similar experience, of which at least two to three years should be in quality assurance; aerospace industry experience is highly preferred
  • Three years of CMM programming experience in PC-DMIS

Other Required Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated accuracy in reading & accurately interpreting shop blueprints, sketches, and other technical information/instructions is required
  • Advanced math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide using  fractions and decimal conversions)
  • Experience using mics, calipers, height gauges, and other precision measuring equipment is required
  • Experience using indicators to verify the flatness and straightness of fixturing and tooling
  • Knowledge of customer and industry standards and quality system requirements, including AS9100, and FAA requirements, is desired
  • Knowledge of problem-solving techniques (i.e., Statistical Quality Control/Statistical Process-Control, etc.)
  • Experience in conducting Lean Manufacturing exercises and Six Sigma projects preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing (English)
  • Basic skills using Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel,and  Word; ERP experience is advantageous
  • A history of consistent employment without unexplained or significant gaps or frequent job changes is expected

Physical Demands and Work Environment

To perform the essential functions of the role, employees must be able to perform the following activities with or without reasonable accommodations:

  • Regularly stand and walk throughout the facility, including all buildings and the manufacturing areas
  • Periodically lift, carry (short distances), and push/pull up to 100 pounds using cranes or other material handling equipment and/or peer assistance
  • Regularly climb steps, stairs, or ladders
  • Occasionally bend, crawl, stoop, squat, or kneel
  • Constantly communicate verbally and in writing (English) using a phone, texts, or other messaging
  • Visual acuity to accurately read mics, calipers, or other precision measuring instruments; accurately distinguish colors
  • Use hands and fingers to operate computer keyboards, measurement instruments, and manually examine parts
  • Visual ability to read precise measurements and part markings

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a manufacturing shop environment where working conditions may vary significantly; the employee may be exposed to:

  • Excessive noise (hearing protection required)
  • Dust, smoke, mist, fumes/vapors (regularly)
  • Extreme temperatures (occasionally)
  • Hazardous equipment, including forklifts, hand tools, cranes or other lifting devices, and other equipment used in a machine shop environment (continually)

The use of PPE, including hearing protection, eye and hand protection, and safety footwear is required.
